Sounds like fuel pressure/flow issue.
Bypass the fuel/water separator with fuel line directly to the engine from the tank and test. Also, make sure fuel tank cap vent is open.

If your boat is angled with the bow higher when trailer-ed, I had the same issue. Since the boat is level on the water and on an angle when trailer-ed, the run off path of rain water around the hatch slides changes. With boat tilting bow up on the trailer, water puddles at front edge of hatch slides...

Agreed...Lightning is looking for the path of least resistance to ground and any contraption to attract or attempt to channel that path on a boat seems insane to me.
