Leaving front hatch open under sail

I would sure like to be able to leave the front hatch open under sail. I have 2 Hella fans and a solar powered vent running but they don't move enough air to combat the humidity. Seems like leaving the front hatch open is the only hope of driving a lot of air. However, leaving the hatch open without...

No watch. Just one of those civilized things I leave behind. If I need the time someone else always has one available, or I check the GPS.

I built a pedestal and box for the top of the console of my X. It is made out of Walmart cutting board. I wanted a flat surface to mount GPS/etc. but also a small box to throw small things in, hold a few water bottles, etc. Basically a rectangular surface with a box hanging off the right end. I moun...

Locker Covers

Wondering what people have done to cover the cockpit openings on the X. - I made some wood ones with screen vents - they only lasted a few seasons in the sun and rain. - I have seen cloth and fiberglass ones - but I want some air circulation so I can keep spare gas tanks in them. - I have looked at ...

I bought a black one and mounted it in the front "window."

- The kids know not to walk anywhere but non-skid so it is pretty safe.
- It blends right in with the tinted material.
- Easiest place to install - no structural stuff, cored material, etc. to worry about.

I have the larger version PP tank and it fills up rather quickly. My family of 5 fills it up during a two day/one overnight sleepover. We are a well hydrated family. My marina has a dump station. Basically a concrete lined hole leading to an underground tank and a rinse out hose. It works ok, but it...

Wow! Kevin, great help. That about covers all my questions. I have used the Minwax product before with good results, and considerably cheaper than Epiphanes. And, I can just pick it up at Lowes/Home Depot.

Thanks very much.

Varnish Recommendation

I finally got around to creating a wood galley table to replace the black fiberglass one. Wondering if their are any recommendations on varnishes. I want a glossy finish and don't want to sand between coats. Sounds like I might also want to delay applying it until the head and humidity pass? Current...

I use the same light weight 6-12' pole with my genoa. Works great and very low cost.

Thanks Dimitri. The genoa has a UV strip sewn on so the sail is in good shape. It is just the small cloth strap that runs from the tack to the tack ring. Just a cloth loop that disiintegrated and ripped away. I might just try to fix it myself. Nothing to loose and I might learn something in the proc...

Looking for a Sail Loft

great day on the lake - a bit hot, but steady 12+ knot winds. Great, until the tack ring ripped off my genoa and it started flying up the furler luff. Just motored over to the nearest sandy beach, drove up onto the sand for a repair. Down comes the genoa, up goes the never-used jib and we are off in...

Just do it! My only experience on the water prior to buying my X was a 4-hour sailing course at a local lake (on a Sunfish.) I liked it so much I bought my 26x a few months after. Start slowly, stick to "safe" sailing - lake, light breeze, off crowded time, ask/bribe a sailing friend along...

My only experience with the Dutchman system was a charter. I charted a Catalina 30-something for a daysail in Charleston Harbor and out into the Atlantic. I asked the charter a few questions about the system and they didn't have too much good to say. They said it worked reasonably well, but just mor...
