Re: Keel problems on V 2-22
I was going to say, the 1971 model year would very likely have had nothing but the steel plates in fiberglass option. I think 73 was the year MacGregor went to the Cast iron ones. Anyway, yes...the steel wrapped in fiberglass keels all seem to have a problem with delaminating. Very fixable, but ther...

Re: Going to look at a Venture 22
Keel: Fiberglass-laminated type (1969-1973): check for cracks in fiberglass and evidence of rust stains. Small cracks toward the bottom can be repaired. Major cracks indicate problems within the steel core that require overhaul. Extensive rust on these keels results in separation of the outer steel ...

Re: V 2-22 Survey: Keel Pivot Bolt Size?
You will need a hydraulic jack for that job. What you want to do is apply just enough lift with the jack to take the weight off of the pivot bolt. Then you can remove the bolt and washers. As long as you do not move the jack before reinstalling the bolt, the keel should not move. I've used this meth...

Re: can't lower keel
Good to hear that you got it freed up. I'd recommend buying a new brake winch....they run anywhere between $50 and $85, depending on what you want. I got a Dutton-Lainson 1200Lb brake winch for my M25; with tax, it came to about $72. If you replace your winch, try to stick with the same brand as you...

Re: Boom Catching Back Stay
I can't speak for the boom problem....mine is homemade from a wrecked Flying Dutchman mast, although the length is right. It hasn't come close to snagging the backstay, so far. As far as the water goes, check your keel lock bolt hole. Mine leaks when sailing on anything but perfectly calm waters.......

Re: what is the difference btwn the venture2-22 and 22 ?
The basic difference between the V22 and V222 is the cabin. The V222's cabin extends a little further forward to accomodate the head (porta potti), and the cabin roof also has a pop-top. Also, now that I think of it, the forward hatch on the V222 is in front of the mast, whereas the hatch on the V22...

Re: keel interchangeability
I found this post in an older thread: The keel from th 24 should work fine on a 25 The Mac 25 has 625 lbs of ballast. The brochure for the V24 cites 575lbs. It may bolt in, and just be heavier. I would try locating measurements, if possible. The designs are not radically different to the eye, though...

Re: Considering trolling motor in place of 10 hp Mercury
...yeah, I wouldn't use a trolling motor on a Mac 25 for anything but strictly temporary applications (like moving your boat from the dock to the boat launch if the main outboard wasn't in working order). Especially a small not a small trolling motor. I know that even used outboards aren't usually c...

Re: DIY Roller Furler for Hank-On Jib / Jenny
I've seen a DIY roller furler for use with hank-on sails before. I saw it installed on a Mac 25 that's for sale nearby. The roller furler is made from PVC pipe (not sure on the diameter) and a wooden/homemade spool at the bottom. What the guy did was make cut-outs, like the holes in a flute, along t...

Re: Trailering w/motor and rudder attached
I have a Venture 2-22, but it's a 1972 model with the built-in motor well (no need for a motor mount). If the later V2-22's have the same reinforcement in the outboard mounting area of the transom as my boat does, then you should be fine if your motor mount is in solid shape. You need to be sure tha...

Re: Question about cockpit sole construction v22
I believe that the core is plywood, yes. Which means that depending on how long water has been getting in there, you could have a fair amount of rot going on. That would not be good. How much does the floor of the cockpit give/flex when you step on that area? If it doesn't move much at all, then you...

You wouldn't happen to know the approximate diameter of the extrusion, would you?

Boom Dimensions for MacGregor 25?
Does anyone know the boom measurements for the MacGregor 25? I'm having a hard time finding a boom for sale (that doesn't have to be shipped from the west coast), so I'm looking into having a new one made. I just have no clue about the dimensions.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Identify that boat
I've been told that the HIN numbers can be located either on the stringers under the cockpit or on the transom (either on the inside or on the outside). I know that on the MacGregor 25, the HIN number is located at the upper starboard corner of the outside face of the transom. As far as refurbishing...

Re: What should I pay for a Venture 22
Depends on all of the above plus the condition of the trailer. Does the boat have a pop top? If so, it's actually a 222 and is a little more desirable. The real biggy is to check that keel for delamination. If the fiberglass is cracking, it means a need for repairs. It only comes with an electric mo...
